We happened to arrive at Mae La for the new year water festival. This festival is celebrated in Burma, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia during April, the hottest time of year. Here people pour water on the Buddha and on each other as a way of showing respect.

we have something similar here in mexico, except we do it on Holy saturday. When there were less restrictions on the use of H2O we would fill up buckets of water and throw it on each other or simply grab a hose and just spray it freely.

Thank you for explaining this festival. I worked with beginning English learners (Lao, Hmong, Karen, Karenni) in St. Paul, Minnesota, who told me about a traditional holiday festival where they pour water on each other. I loved the idea, and now I understand more about the festival.
